Goodyear, Miles

Goodyear, Miles (1817-1849), an American pioneer and fur trader, built the first settled homestead in Utah in about 1845. He was born on Feb. 24, 1817, in Connecticut, and spent his boyhood there. He then moved to the frontier, where Marcus Whitman found him in a destitute condition (see Whitman, Marcus ). He later became associated with mountain fur traders and explored the territory around Salt Lake. The Mormons bought Goodyear’s property in 1848. Goodyear died on Nov. 12, 1849.
