Graf, Steffi

Graf, Steffi (1969-…), a German tennis champion, was one of the greatest women players in tennis history. In 1988, Graf became only the third woman to win the Grand Slam of tennis, taking the singles titles at Wimbledon in England, the French Open, the United States Open, and the Australian Open all in the same year. She also won the gold medal in women’s singles at the 1988 Summer Olympic Games. She became known for her powerful forehand shot and her speed in covering the court.

Graf became a professional player in 1982, at the age of 13, and was the top-ranked woman player in the world by 1987. Graf is the only tennis player to win every Grand Slam tournament at least four times. She retired in 1999 with 22 Grand Slam singles titles. Graf is one of only six players to win 20 or more grand slam singles titles. She won Wimbledon in 1988, 1989, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1995, and 1996; the Australian Open in 1988, 1989, 1990, and 1994; the French Open in 1987, 1988, 1993, 1995, 1996, and 1999; and the U.S. Open in 1988, 1989, 1993, 1995, and 1996.

Stefanie Maria Graf was born on June 14, 1969, in Mannheim, in what was then West Germany, and grew up in Bruhl. In 2001, she married the American tennis star Andre Agassi.
