Granada

Granada, << gruh NAH duh, >> a port on Lake Nicaragua, is an important commercial center and one of the largest cities in Nicaragua. The municipality of Granada has a population of 125,798. A municipality may include rural areas as well as the urban center. From Granada, merchants ship sugar, coffee, cacao, alcohol, hides, cotton, and indigo to the Pacific Coast. Granada is the oldest city in Nicaragua. It was founded in 1524. William Walker, an American military adventurer, burned Granada in 1856, but it was soon rebuilt (see Walker, William ). Many beautiful buildings still are standing.
