Great Basin National Park is in eastern Nevada. It lies entirely within the Great Basin region. Established in 1986, the park was created out of land that formerly made up Lehman Caves National Monument and part of Humboldt National Forest. The terrain of Great Basin National Park ranges from high desert to mountain peaks. Wheeler Peak, the park’s highest mountain, rises 13,063 feet (3,982 meters) above sea level. Bristlecone pines, some up to 5,000 years old, grow in the park. Animals include bighorn sheep, bobcats, eagles, hawks, mountain lions, and mule deer. For the area of the park, see National Park System (table: National parks) .
