Great Dane is a breed of large dog. Great Danes are strong, elegant, courageous, and friendly. They weigh from 120 to 175 pounds (54 to 79 kilograms). Males stand about 34 inches (86 centimeters) high at the shoulder and females about 30 inches (76 centimeters) high. The Great Dane’s short, dense coat may be tan, brown with black stripes, black, blue, or white with black patches.
The Great Dane was developed in Germany during the 1500’s. It was first used in hunting boars and as a guard dog. Today, Great Danes make gentle, devoted, protective family dogs.
