Greensboro, << GREENZ `bur` oh or GREENZ `bur` ruh >> (pop. 299,035) is one of the largest cities in North Carolina. Greensboro is a commercial, industrial, and educational center. It lies in the north-central part of the state. Greensboro and High Point form a metropolitan area with a population of 776,566.
Greensboro is a manufacturing and petroleum-marketing center. The city’s main products and services are brick and clay products, chemicals, electronic equipment, furniture, insurance, pharmaceuticals, textiles and apparel, and tobacco products. Greensboro has two branches of the University of North Carolina—North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. It also is the home of Bennett, Greensboro, and Guilford colleges.
Greensboro was founded in 1808. It was named for Nathanael Greene, an American Revolutionary War general. In 1781, troops fought the British in the battle of Guilford Courthouse near what is now Greensboro. Greensboro is the seat of Guilford County. It has a council-manager form of government.
