Gregoire, Paul << gray GWAHR, pawl >> (1911-1993), was appointed a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church by Pope John Paul II in 1988. Gregoire had been appointed archbishop of Montreal by Pope Paul VI in 1968, serving until he resigned in 1990.
Gregoire was born on Oct. 24, 1911, in Verdun, Quebec. He was ordained a priest in 1937. He held several positions at the Université de Montréal (University of Montreal) from 1950 to 1961, including student chaplain and professor of the philosophy of education. In 1961, he became auxiliary bishop of Montreal. He was a member of the Sacred Congregation for the Clergy from 1978 until 1983, when he joined the Sacred Congregation for Catholic Education. He died on Oct. 30, 1993.
