Ground, in electricity, is an electrical conductor that is connected to Earth to complete a circuit. In electrical equipment, such as household appliances, the ground conducts electric current that may build up in the appliance because of a “leak” or a short circuit. If the appliance were not grounded, the high voltage it acquires might kill someone. In some electrical equipment, the metal frame serves as a ground. Many appliance plugs have two flat prongs and one round one. The round prong serves as a ground connection. In the United Kingdom and other countries in the Commonwealth of Nations, people use the term earth rather than ground.
