Grumman, << GRUHM muhn, >> Leroy (1895-1982), an American industrialist, founded and became chairman of the board of the Grumman Aircraft Engineering Corporation (now part of Northrop Grumman Corporation) in 1929. He became honorary chairman of the board in 1966.
The company produces military aircraft, nonnuclear naval vessels, and defense systems. It began by producing the first fighter plane with retractable landing gear. Later, the company and its affiliates produced boats, commercial aircraft, and truck and trailer bodies. Grumman was born on Jan. 4, 1895, in Huntington, New York.
