Grunion, << GRUHN yuhn, >> is a small, silvery fish that lives along the coast of southern California and northwestern Mexico. Grunions lay their eggs on sandy beaches from late February to early September. The fish must lay their eggs on nights of the highest tide. Many people gather on the beaches at this time of year and catch the fish. Grunion eggs hatch two weeks after they are laid, during the next series of high tides. A related fish, the gulf grunion, is found only in the northern part of the Gulf of California. The gulf grunion lays its eggs during the day as well as at night.
