Guernsey, << GURN zee, >> is the westernmost of the Channel Islands, a group of islands in the English Channel (see Channel Islands ). It has a population of about 67,000 and an area of about 24 square miles (63 square kilometers). St. Peter Port is the island’s capital and chief town.
Financial services form Guernsey’s leading industry. Tourism and horticulture (flower gardening) also contribute to the economy. Small farms, hedged fields, and narrow, winding lanes cover much of Guernsey. The Guernsey breed of cattle, known for their rich milk, originated on the island.
