Guinea, << GIHN ee >>, was an old English coin, equal to 21 shillings. It was first coined in 1663 out of gold from the Guinea coast in West Africa, and took its name from that region. It was the chief English gold coin until 1813, when the sovereign, equal to 20 shillings, took its place.
