Haleakala, << `hah` leh `ah` kah LA, >> National Park became a separate park in 1961. It had been part of Hawaii (also spelled Hawai‘i) Volcanoes National Park, since 1916. Haleakala National Park lies on the island of Maui, in Hawaii. Its chief attraction, the dormant volcano Haleakala (house of the sun), has colorful rock formations in its crater.
The Daniel K. Inouye Solar Telescope (DKIST) stands at the top of Haleakala. The facility, which started operating in 2019, ranks as the largest solar telescope on Earth.
