Hampton University is a private, coeducational university in Hampton, Virginia. The school has played a historic role in the education of Black Americans and Indigenous (native) Americans. Hampton University was founded in 1868 to help educate enslaved people freed after the American Civil War (1861–1865). In 1870, it was chartered as Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute. From 1878 to 1912, the school received federal aid for the education of Indigenous Americans. In 1930, the school’s name was changed to Hampton Institute. The present name was adopted in 1984.
