Hannibal, Missouri (pop. 17,108), is the boyhood home of the writer Mark Twain. It lies in northeast Missouri in a rich farming region along the Mississippi River. The Mark Twain Memorial Bridge across the Mississippi connects Hannibal with the state of Illinois.
Hannibal’s industries include printing, tourism, and the production of cement, cereals, chemicals, dairy and farm products, electrical heating elements, and precision tools. Chief points of interest include the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum. The city is the site of Hannibal–LaGrange University.
Hannibal was founded in 1819. It has a council-manager form of government.
