Harvest moon is the name given to the full moon that occurs nearest the autumnal equinox. In the Northern Hemisphere, the autumnal equinox occurs on September 22 or September 23. The moon rises at about the same time for several nights. It shines with such brightness that farmers in northern Europe and Canada can work until late at night to take in the fall harvest. In the Southern Hemisphere, the harvest moon occurs in March, at the vernal equinox.
