Henty, G. A. (1832-1902), wrote lively and popular adventure books for boys. His 80 books, written in a direct style, often use his own experiences as background and deal with real historical events. They reflect Henty’s belief in the superiority of the British Empire. Henty’s first boys’ novel was Out on the Pampas (1870). His other novels include With Clive in India (1884), The Cat of Bubastes (1889), With Moore at Carunna (1898), and With Roberts to Pretoria (1902).
Henty was born at Trumpington, in Cambridgeshire, England, on Dec. 8, 1832. His full name was George Alfred Henty. He attended Cambridge University but left in 1855 to volunteer for the ambulance service in the Crimean War. In 1865, Henty became a newspaper correspondent and covered several European wars. He died on Nov. 16, 1902.
