Herrera, Tomas

Herrera, Tomas, << eh RAY rah, toh MAHS >> (1804-1854), was a soldier and statesman of Panama. He led the movement in 1840 to make Panama independent of Colombia. He was president of the Free State of Panama for the year that it existed, and later held high office in Colombia. Herrera was born in Panama City. In 1854, he put down a revolt in Colombia, and was killed leading his army into Bogotá.
