Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam, Hawaii, is the headquarters of the Pacific Air Forces, which includes U.S. Air Force units in Japan and Korea. The joint base consists of two bases near Honolulu—Hickam and Pearl Harbor—that were combined in 2009. A Japanese air attack on nearby Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, killed 139 airmen and destroyed 64 aircraft on the base. Hickam was established in 1935 and named for Lieutenant Colonel Horace M. Hickam, who died in an aircraft accident in 1934. See also Pearl Harbor .
