Hickey, James Aloysius

Hickey, James Aloysius (1920-2004), was appointed a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church by Pope John Paul II in 1988. The pope had appointed him archbishop of Washington, D.C., in 1980. Hickey retired as archbishop in early 2001.

Hickey was born on Oct. 11, 1920, in Midland, Michigan. He was ordained a priest in 1946. He served as secretary to the bishop of Saginaw, Michigan, from 1951 to 1960. Hickey was rector of St. Paul Seminary in Saginaw from 1960 to 1968 and auxiliary bishop of Saginaw from 1967 to 1969. He was rector of North American College in Rome from 1969 to 1974, when he became bishop of Cleveland. Hickey served as bishop of Cleveland until his appointment as archbishop of Washington, D.C. He died on Oct. 24, 2004.
