Hopkins, Johns (1795-1873), was an American merchant, financier, and philanthropist. He left $7 million to establish Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Hospital. He was born on May 19, 1795, in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, and made a fortune as a wholesale grocer in Baltimore. Later, he helped organize the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. He also helped Baltimore with loans during the American Civil War (1861-1865) and the financial panic of 1873. Hopkins was a Quaker and an abolitionist. He died on Dec. 24, 1873.
