Hoyle, Edmond (1672-1769), was an English teacher of whist, a card game like bridge. In 1742, he published A Short Treatise on the Game of Whist, containing the Laws of the Game. Later, he added rules on other card games and on backgammon and chess. His book became so famous that the expression according to Hoyle came to mean according to the rules of the game, or in the proper way. Hoyle died on Aug. 29, 1769.
