Hyssop

Hyssop, << HIHS uhp, >> is a bushy evergreen shrub that is sometimes used to flavor foods. The plant is native to southern Europe but is now cultivated in many parts of the world. Hyssop has a square, coarse stem from 1 to 2 feet (30 to 61 centimeters) high. The seeds, flowers, and green parts of the plant have a strong odor and taste. People sometimes use hyssop to season foods. It also is used as an ingredient in Benedictine and Chartreuse, two popular liqueurs (strong, sweet, highly flavored alcoholic drinks). Hyssop may be used as a traditional medicine. Gardeners sometimes plant hyssop as a shrub for borders of lawns and gardens.
