BirdLife International is a global partnership of conservation organizations concerned with the preservation of birds. BirdLife International works to save birds from extinction, to protect their habitats, and to preserve the health and diversity of nature. The partnership consists of over 100 nongovernmental organizations throughout the world. Each partner works independently and represents BirdLife International in its region. BirdLife International maintains its headquarters in Cambridge, England.
BirdLife International collects data on the world’s birds and monitors changes in the environment. In doing so, the organization identifies threatened bird species and works to conserve them. BirdLife International’s data form the basis of the bird information published in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The Red List is a comprehensive list of threatened species prepared by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).
Conservationists founded BirdLife International in the United Kingdom in 1922 as the International Council for Bird Preservation (ICBP). The ICBP officially changed its name to BirdLife International in 1993.
