International Telecommunication Union (ITU)

International Telecommunication Union (ITU) establishes regulations and standards for international telecommunications, including radio, satellite, telephone, and Internet communications. It also works to improve communications technology and infrastructure worldwide. The ITU is a specialized agency of the United Nations. A conference of all 191 ITU member states is held every four years to set general policies. A Council of 46 member states and a General Secretariat handle administrative functions. The ITU developed from the International Telegraph Union, established in 1865. Headquarters of the ITU are in Geneva, Switzerland.
