Isaacs, Sir Isaac

Isaacs, Sir Isaac (1855-1948), was the first Australian-born governor general of Australia. He served as governor general from 1931 to 1936.

Isaacs was born on Aug. 6, 1855, in Melbourne. He was educated at Beechworth Grammar School, a high school for boys.He later studied law at the University of Melbourne. Isaacs served in the Victorian Legislative Assembly from 1892 to 1901. He was a member of the federal House of Representatives from 1901 to 1906. He served as a justice of the High Court of Australia from 1906 to 1930. He served briefly as chief justice before he became governor general. Isaacs died on Feb. 11, 1948, in Melbourne.
