Jakobovits, Lord (1921-1999), Sir Immanuel Jakobovits, was a Jewish religious leader. He was chief rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregation of the British Commonwealth of Nations from 1967 to 1991. Jakobovits was born on Feb. 8, 1921, in Königsberg, Germany, and was the son of a rabbi. He moved to England in 1936 and studied at Jews’ College, London, and at London University. During World War II (1939-1945), he ministered to three London synagogues. He was chief rabbi of Ireland from 1949 to 1958 and rabbi of the Fifth Avenue Synagogue, New York City, from 1958 to 1967. He was knighted in 1981 and made a peer in 1988. Jakobovits died on Oct. 31, 1999.
