Jefferson, State of, was the name of a proposed state in the United States. In 1915, the Texas legislature suggested that the Panhandle, or northwestern part of Texas, become the State of Jefferson. The proposal was discussed but did not become law. The discussion disclosed that the law which admitted Texas to the Union gave the state the right to divide itself, with the consent of Congress.
