John Dory is a short, deep-bodied fish with a characteristic large black spot on each side. It is widely distributed in both the Northern and Southern hemispheres.
A weak swimmer, the John Dory is carried along in drifting currents. Specimens of the fish have been recorded over 24 inches (60 centimeters) in length, but the average size is less than 12 inches (30 centimeters). The John Dory has good-tasting flesh. Commercial fishing crews catch it in many countries.
