Johnson, Hugh Samuel (1882-1942), was an American government administrator and soldier. During World War I (1914-1918), he headed the Selective Service System. He became a brigadier general in 1918. During the war, Johnson also worked for the United States Army General Staff and served on the War Industries Board. From 1919 to 1933, he worked in business. In 1933 and 1934, Johnson directed the National Recovery Administration, which set up and enforced rules of fair practice for business and industry.
Johnson was born on Aug. 5, 1882, in Fort Scott, Kansas, and graduated from the U.S. Military Academy in 1903. He served with U.S. Army forces in Mexico in 1916. He died on April 15, 1942.
