Jonquil, << JONG kwuhl, >> is any of several yellow daffodils that came from southern Europe and northern Africa. In the United States, the best-known types are a species named jonquil and a species called campernelle jonquil. The campernelle jonquil is a hybrid bred from different jonquil species. Jonquils bear three to six flowers on a stalk about 1 foot (30 centimeters) high. The flowers’ petals are grouped around a tube about 1 inch (2.5 centimeters) long. The name jonquil comes from the Latin juncus, meaning rush. Jonquils are planted in autumn. See also Narcissus .
