Juilliard, Augustus

Juilliard, << JOOL ih ahrd, >> Augustus (1836-1919), an American merchant, financier, and philanthropist, was an outstanding patron of music. He grew wealthy in the textile business. He gave time and money to cultural enterprises. He served as president of the Metropolitan Opera Company from 1892 until his death on April 25, 1919, and left his fortune to the Juilliard Musical Foundation (see Juilliard School ).

Juilliard was born at sea to French immigrants on April 19, 1836. He grew up near Canton, Ohio, and later settled in New York City.
