Kaiser, << KY zuhr, >> was the title used by rulers of the German Empire. Kaiser is the German form of the Latin word caesar (emperor). German emperors of the Holy Roman Empire sometimes used this title in its German form. Wilhelm I of Prussia took the title of kaiser in 1871, when he became emperor of a united Germany.
