Kansas, University of

Kansas, University of, is a state-supported coeducational school with campuses in Kansas City, Lawrence, Overland Park, Salina, and Wichita. The Kansas legislature in 1864 passed an act establishing the University of Kansas. The school opened in 1866. The school of medicine offers clinical programs on its Salina and Wichita campuses. The Edwards Campus, in Overland Park, provides programs for working adults.

The university’s libraries in Lawrence feature special collections on ornithology (the study of birds) and on such authors as Miguel de Cervantes, James Joyce, D. H. Lawrence, and William Butler Yeats. Museums of art, classics, and natural history are also on the Lawrence campus.
