Kara << KAHR uh >> Sea, an arm of the Arctic Ocean, lies off the northern coast of Siberia, between the Kara Strait and the Severnaya Zemlya Islands. The Kara Sea is about 900 miles (1,450 kilometers) long and 600 miles (970 kilometers) wide. Ice blocks the sea most of the year, but shipping to the Yenisey and Ob rivers occurs for about two months in summer. The Kara Strait connects the sea with the Barents Sea.
