Kentucky, University of, is a state university in Lexington, Kentucky. The University of Kentucky was founded in 1865 as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of the Kentucky University. The association with Kentucky University ended in 1878, and the school became the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky in 1879. The school took its present name in 1916.
The school first admitted women in 1880. It admitted African Americans in 1949.
