Killarney, << kih LAHR nee >> (pop. 14,412), is a popular tourist town in County Kerry in southwestern Ireland. Killarney has been a center of tourism since the late 1700’s. The Ring of Kerry, a circular trail around the Iveragh Peninsula, runs through Killarney. The surrounding misty, green countryside has many lakes, forests, small mountains, and scenic views. Attractions include Ross Castle, a scenic valley called the Gap of Dunloe, and Muckross House. Nearby Dingle Peninsula and Innisfallen Island also help draw visitors to the area. A large number of hotels, guesthouses, shops, restaurants, and pubs cater to the tourists.
Killarney has long been a rural market center. Besides tourism, the town’s leading economic activities include engineering and the manufacture of cranes, processed foods, and textiles.
