Kudu << KOO doo >> is a large antelope. Two kinds of kudus live in the grassy regions of southern and eastern Africa south of the Sahara. The greater kudu stands about 60 inches (150 centimeters) high at the shoulder, and weighs about 600 pounds (270 kilograms). It is reddish to dark bluish-gray and has 4 to 10 vertical stripes on its sides. The male has spiral horns up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) long. The lesser kudu is about 40 inches (100 centimeters) high, weighs about 230 pounds (104 kilograms), and is dark yellowish-gray. Kudus eat grass and shrub sprouts. They live close to rivers in dry seasons.
