Lake Nyasa << ny AS uh >> is the southernmost of a chain of large freshwater lakes in the Great Rift Valley of eastern Africa. It lies about 400 miles (640 kilometers) inland from the Indian Ocean. Lake Nyasa, also called Lake Malawi, flows into the Indian Ocean by way of the Shire and Zambezi rivers (see Malawi). The lake is 350 miles (563 kilometers) long and has an area of 11,400 square miles (29,500 square kilometers). Its waters are 2,300 feet (701 meters) deep.
