Lake Peipus, << PY puhs >>, lies on the border between Estonia and Russia. Lake Peipus is 93 miles (150 kilometers) long and covers 1,400 square miles (3,626 square kilometers). In 1242, the frozen lake was the scene of a historic battle between Slavic forces and members of the Teutonic Knights. During World War II (1939-1945), the lake area was the scene of heavy fighting between German troops and troops of the Soviet Union.
