Lake Tana << TAH nah >>, also called Tsana << TSAH nah >>, lies in northwestern Ethiopia. It serves as the main source of the Blue Nile, or Abbai River. The Blue Nile gets its color from the silt-free water of Lake Tana. Lying 6,000 feet (1,829 meters) above sea level, Lake Tana is 47 miles (76 kilometers) long and 44 miles (71 kilometers) wide.
