Lake Volta, << VOL tuh or VOHL tuh >>, in central Ghana, is one of the world’s largest artificially created lakes. It is the reservoir behind Akosombo Dam on the Volta River. Lake Volta extends 250 miles (402 kilometers) north of the dam and was formed by the completion of the dam in 1965. The lake covers an area of 3,275 square miles (8,482 square kilometers). The power station at Akosombo Dam uses water from Lake Volta to generate electric power for the area.
