Landes, Bertha Knight (1868-1943), was the first woman mayor of a major United States city. A Republican, she was mayor of Seattle from 1926 to 1928. She served on the City Council from 1922 to 1926. She was born in Ware, Massachusetts, on Oct. 19, 1868, and attended Indiana University. After retiring from public service, she became a lecturer and writer. Landes died on Nov. 29, 1943.
