Lauder, Sir Harry

Lauder, Sir Harry (1870-1950), was one of the United Kingdom’s best-loved entertainers. He delighted audiences for more than 40 years with humorous character sketches, patter, and Scottish-dialect songs. His songs include “Roamin’ in the Gloamin’,” “A Wee Deoch-an-Doris,” “It’s Nice to Get Up in the Mornin’ (But It’s Nicer to Lie in Yer Bed),” and “I Belong to Glasgow.” Lauder wrote his own material and always appeared alone on stage, dressed in a traditional Scottish costume. He recorded many of his songs and stories. Harry MacLennan Lauder was born on Aug. 4, 1870, in Portobello, Scotland. He was knighted in 1919. He died on Feb. 26, 1950.
