Laver, Rod (1938-…), an Australian tennis champion, ranks among the greatest players in tennis history. Laver is the only man to win the grand slam men’s singles titles twice. He won the Australian Open, the French Open, the U.S. Open, and Wimbledon in England in 1962 and again in 1969. Laver won two more Wimbledon titles and another Australian Open. He was also a member of Australian teams that won the Davis Cup five times. Laver, a left-hander nicknamed “The Rocket,” was known for his ability to hit the ball with both power and heavy spin.
Rodney George Laver was born on Aug. 9, 1938, in Rockhampton, Australia. He turned professional in 1962.
