Lincoln, Robert Todd (1843-1926), the oldest son of President Abraham Lincoln, became a well-known statesman and lawyer. In 1881, President James A. Garfield named Robert Lincoln secretary of war. Lincoln held the same post under President Chester A. Arthur. From 1889 to 1893, Lincoln served as minister to the United Kingdom. He then became associated with the Pullman Company and served as president of the firm from 1897 to 1911.
Lincoln was born on Aug. 1, 1843, in Springfield, Illinois. He studied at Harvard College and Harvard Law School. Lincoln served briefly in the Union Army. After the American Civil War (1861-1865), he practiced law. He died on July 26, 1926.
