Lockwood, Belva Ann Bennett (1830-1917), was an American lawyer and activist. She was the first woman admitted to practice law before the Supreme Court of the United States. She also ran for the U.S. presidency in 1884 and 1888, as the candidate of the Equal Rights Party. She supported woman suffrage, equal pay for women government employees, international peace, Indian land rights, and other causes.
Lockwood was born in Royalton, New York, on Oct. 24, 1830. She graduated from Genesee College in 1857, and from National University Law School in 1873. She died on May 19, 1917.
