Lott, Dame Felicity

Lott, Dame Felicity (1947-…), is a leading British soprano. She has won special praise for her performances in the operas of the Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and the German composer Richard Strauss. Her major roles have included Anne Trulove in the Russian-born composer Igor Stravinsky‘s The Rake’s Progress, the title role in Strauss’s Arabella, Eva in the German composer Richard Wagner‘s The Mastersinger of Nuremberg, and Countess Madeleine in Strauss’s Capriccio. Lott has also won praise for her song recitals and as a soloist in oratorios.

Lott was born on May 8, 1947, in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire. She studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London. She made her stage debut in 1973 and first performed with the English National Opera (ENO), in London, as Pamina in Mozart’s The Magic Flute (1975). Lott was a founding member of the Songmakers’ Almanac in 1976. The organization presents song recitals devoted to a particular theme. In 1996, Lott was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
