Loudon, John Claudius (1783-1843), was a British landscape gardener and horticulturist. He first became famous for his Encyclopedia of Gardening (1822), the earliest book to treat the subject comprehensively. The work made Loudon the foremost expert on the subject in English. He and his wife, Jane Webb, wrote the successful An Encyclopaedia of Cottage, Farm and Villa Architecture (1833). Loudon also edited the influential Gardener’s Magazine from 1826 until his death. In addition, he wrote several books on the design of conservatories. As a landscape gardener, Loudon was particularly important in his designs for cemeteries both in the United Kingdom and in North America.
Loudon was born on April 8, 1783, in Strathclyde Region. He died on Dec. 14, 1843.
