Lujan, Manuel, Jr.

Lujan, << LOO hahn, >> Manuel, Jr. (1928-2019), served as United States secretary of the interior from 1989 to 1993 under President George H. W. Bush. He was the first Hispanic American to head the U.S. Department of the Interior.

From 1969 until January 1989, Lujan had served in the U.S. House of Representatives as a Republican from New Mexico. In the House, he became the leading Republican member of the Interior and Insular Affairs Committee and the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. Lujan was born in San Ildefonso, New Mexico, on May 12, 1928. He died on April 25, 2019.
